Debt payoff date calculator

Payoff date for $8,000 at 19.99%, paying $275.00/monthworked example

January 1, 2030

Time to zero
3 yr 5 mo
Total interest
$3,033.22
Total paid
$11,033.22

Paying $275.00 every month clears this balance in 3 yr 5 mo, costing $3,033.22 in interest. Each month's date is the start date plus that many months, clamped at month ends — a schedule anchored to the 31st pays February 28 in February, not March 3.

What do you want to work out?

Two directions, one date: enter a payment to get the calendar date a balance reaches zero, or pick a target date to get the exact monthly payment that lands there. Dates clamp properly at month ends, and the closed-form answer is checked against a full month-by-month schedule.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1

Pick the direction you actually need

Two modes: give a payment and get a date, or give a target date and get the payment that lands there. The second is the one to use when the deadline is fixed — a promo ending, a lease starting, a year you want to begin clean.

  2. 2

Enter the balance from your statement

As everywhere on this site, the statement balance is the honest anchor: it is the figure interest was last computed on. Mid-cycle app balances drift with pending transactions and give a date that is precise about the wrong number.

  3. 3

Sanity-check the payment in target-date mode

The required payment is rounded up to the next cent so it is always sufficient. If it comes back higher than you can manage, that is real information: it means the date needs to move, not that the arithmetic is wrong.

  4. 4

Note that dates clamp at month ends

A schedule anchored to the 31st pays February 28 in February, not March 3. Small, but payoff dates that quietly drift a few days per month end up weeks wrong across a multi-year schedule.

Everything you type here is computed in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored on a server, sent anywhere, or shared — there is no account, and your balances never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

How is the payoff date computed?
The engine runs your balance month by month — interest at APR divided by 12, then your payment — until it reaches zero, and the date of that final payment is your payoff date. A closed-form formula produces the same month count and the two are tested against each other, so the date is not an approximation of the schedule; it is the schedule.
How does "pay off by a date" mode work?
It inverts the amortization formula: given the balance, the rate, and the number of months until your target, it returns the fixed monthly payment that clears the balance in exactly that many payments, rounded up to the next cent so the stated payment is always sufficient.
What happens with a payoff date like January 31?
Dates clamp instead of sliding: a schedule anchored to the 31st pays on February 28 in February, not March 3. It is a small thing, but payoff dates that quietly drift by a few days per month end up weeks wrong over a multi-year schedule.
Is the date a promise?
It is arithmetic on the numbers you entered, under the stated monthly-accrual convention. New purchases, rate changes, or skipped months all move it — which is exactly why the site lets you save the plan and shows you, on every return visit, whether the real date is holding.
