Negotiate a bill

Medical bills are negotiable in ways most people are never told about, and several of the levers are federal rules rather than goodwill. Every template here quotes the rule it rests on — the No Surprises Act, IRS section 501(r) for nonprofit hospitals, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the hospital price transparency rule — and every draft stays in your browser.

The seven letters

Each has its own guide explaining when it applies, what it rests on, and what to do after sending.

Everything you type here is computed in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored on a server, sent anywhere, or shared — there is no account, and your balances never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first with a medical bill I cannot pay?
Request an itemized bill, before agreeing to any payment plan. A summary bill cannot be checked, and payment terms are easier to agree than to revisit. Once you have the itemized version, the error checklist and the overcharge checker tell you which lever fits.
Do these letters actually work?
They put a specific, answerable request in writing, with the rule it rests on named. That is what moves a billing department — an administrative task they can act on, rather than a complaint they can file. Nobody can promise an outcome, and any site that does is selling something.
Is my letter sent anywhere from this site?
No. Letters are assembled in your browser and saved only to your device. If you ask for the follow-up schedule by email, we receive your address and which template you chose — never the letter, the amounts, or any name in it. That boundary is enforced by tests, not just policy.
What if the bill is already with a collector?
Different rules apply, and better ones: the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives you a 30-day window after their validation notice to dispute in writing, which pauses collection of the disputed amount until they verify it. That letter is in the generator, and the deadline calculator on its page counts the days for you.
